The Wildlands Studies Department at the University of California, Santa
Barbara, invites applications for an instructor position for its Alaska
field program in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve on 21
June-8 August 2007.
The field program includes a rigorous curriculum of fieldwork in
ecology, Earth sciences, land management, and related humanities for a
group of sixteen undergraduate students. Based at the Wrangell Mountains
Center, an institute for environmental education, research, and the arts
located in the historic town of McCarthy at the center of the park, the
program involves extensive backpacking in the park wilderness.
The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary faculty.
Responsibilities include working collaboratively within a learning
community of students and staff, conducting classes in the candidate's
areas of expertise, mentoring students in designing and carrying out
field projects, and supporting and supervising students living in
challenging conditions.
Candidates should hold at least a Masters degree in a relevant field,
though a PhD or substantial progress toward a PhD is strongly preferred.
Candidates must also demonstrate excellence in undergraduate teaching
and have experience indicating ability to lead a backpacking group
traveling cross-country over alpine terrain. A history of community
service is desirable. While this appointment is for the summer 2007
field season, candidates with interest in potential longer-term
involvement with this annual summer program are preferred.
