The U.S. Arctic Research Commission (USARC) is requesting public comment
on "Report on Goals and Objectives for Arctic Research 2007," a draft
outline that describes the national Arctic research priorities of the
United States.
Prepared biennially by USARC for the President and Congress, the report
calls for finishing the International Polar Year with a sustainable
Arctic Research Program. USARC also encourages initiatives on the
following themes:
- Environmental Change of the Arctic and Bering Seas;
- Arctic Human Health;
- Civil Infrastructure;
- Natural Resource Assessment and Earth Science; and
- Indigenous Language, Identity, and Culture.
Representatives from the research community, federal, state, tribal, and
local governments, industry groups, international organizations,
non-governmental organizations, and any interested individuals are
invited to provide comments on the report outline. USARC requests those
who submit comments note that words in boldface in the document
represent the current outline of the report and the text below
represents some but not all of the discussion points the USARC may
include in the final report.
Established by the Arctic Research and Policy Act of 1984, USARC
develops and recommends an integrated national Arctic research policy
and assists in establishing a national Arctic research program plan to
implement the policy. USARC commissioners also facilitate cooperation
between the federal government, state and local governments, and other
nations with respect to Arctic research, both basic and applied.
Comments on the report outline should be submitted no later than
Tuesday, 12 December 2006, via fax or email (with the subject line
