APPLY NOW TO PARTICIPATE AS A 2007/2008 POLARTREC RESEARCHER
Researchers are invited to submit an application to host a PolarTREC
teacher in the Arctic or Antarctic during the 2007 and/or 2007/2008
field seasons. More information and application forms are available at:
http://www.polartrec.com

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
PolarTREC is a three-year (2007-2009) program that pairs K-12 teachers
with researchers to improve science education through authentic polar
research experiences. PolarTREC builds on the strengths of the existing
TREC program in the Arctic, http://www.arcus.org/trec, to embrace a
wider range of research activities occurring at both poles during and
after the International Polar Year. The program fosters the integration
of research and education to produce a legacy of long-term
teacher-researcher collaborations, improved teacher content knowledge
through experiences in scientific inquiry, and broad public interest and
engagement in polar science. The International Polar Year presents an
outstanding opportunity for researchers to share their passion for polar
research through topics that naturally engage students and the wider
public.

During PolarTREC, thirty-six U.S. teachers will spend two to six weeks
in the Arctic or Antarctic, working closely with the researchers in the
field as an integral part of the science team. PolarTREC teachers and
researchers will be matched based on similar goals and interests and
teachers will be trained in the program requirements prior to the field
season. While in the field, teachers and researchers will communicate
extensively with their colleagues, communities, and students of all ages
across the globe, using a variety of tools including satellite phones,
online journals, podcasts, and interactive "Live from IPY" events and
web-based seminars.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Researcher hosts must be at U.S. institutions and applications from
researchers on NSF-funded projects will receive priority when selecting
projects for teacher deployments. Projects hosting PolarTREC teachers
are not intended to incur additional costs. The PolarTREC project will
provide training to the teacher before the deployment and assist in
arranging field logistics that will be supported by funding agencies.
Interested researchers should submit an application even if research
projects are still in the planning stages or funding is pending.

If you are interested in participating in PolarTREC but unable to apply
during this initial application period, please contact us to discuss
opportunities for future participation.

Applications and additional information about researcher and teacher
requirements can be found on the PolarTREC website at:
