The first annual Arctic Frontiers conference will be held in Tromso,
Norway, on 21-26 January 2007. The theme of the conference, "Balancing
Human Use and Ecosystem Protection," reflects the goal of using a
pan-arctic perspective to promote sustainable levels of human activity
based on scientific knowledge and cultural sensitivity. The conference
is comprised of two parts: a two-day session on policy development
followed by a four-day scientific meeting.

The session on policy development is a forum for stakeholders to share
perspectives on upcoming environmental, social, and political challenges
in the Arctic and discuss how they intend to take responsibility in
order to solve them. The roles of science, governments, and the public,
and the need for collaboration among these entities, will be discussed.
The scientific meeting will focus on food web dynamics and
biogeochemical fluxes in the Arctic Ocean. Data from three international
research programs with respective foci in different arctic regions will
be presented, allowing a pan-arctic comparison in keeping with the theme
and goals of the conference.

A Ph.D. workshop is being held concurrent with the conference on 23-29
January 2007. Doctoral students can participate in the scientific
meeting of the Arctic Frontiers conference followed by a three-day
seminar based on information presented there.

The Arctic Frontiers conference and Ph.D. workshop are sponsored by the
Arctic Marine Ecosystem Research Network (ARCTOS), a Tromso,
Norway-based consortium of scientists in arctic marine productivity and
ecology whose goals are to increase cooperation throughout Europe in
scientific research, utilization of infrastructure, public and academic
outreach, and teaching opportunities.
