The Department of Geotechnology at Delft University of Technology in The
Netherlands has a vacancy for a PhD position in Applied Geology as part
of a research project focused on sediment supply to the arctic coastal
zone.
Delft University of Technology is a multifaceted institution offering

vitality.
Changes in the polar system due to the changing global climate are both
rapid and dramatic, forming one of the main themes of the International
Polar Year 2007-2008. The successful applicant will work on a project
addressing how arctic river sediment supply to the arctic coastal system
is influenced by the changing climate. The complexities of glacial melt
and river response need to be unraveled and only then can the sediment
and nutrient supply to the ocean be predicted. The objective of this
research is to describe the interacting forcing factors and responses in
a numerical model. An existing climate-driven sediment flux model will
be advanced to link glaciological parameters to sediment production.
Field observations in arctic rivers are of vital importance for
validating the model. The overarching goal of the modelling framework is
to process topographical, climatological, and glaciological data and to
predict the water and sediment fluxes in arbitrary arctic river basins.
The potential effects of future Greenland Ice Cap melting on the
sediment flux to the arctic coastal ecosystem can then be assessed.
Applicants should be a recent MSc graduate in the field of Earth
sciences with a strong background in numerical modelling or GIS. He/she
should have vivid interest in geological and geophysical fieldwork.
He/she should also have broad experience in considering relevant
research and fieldwork in order to participate efficiently in the
International Polar Year activities in the early stages of this PhD
project. Given the fact that the fieldwork takes place in the arctic
region, applicants are specifically sought who are flexible and enjoy
working in small field teams. Proficiency in spoken and written English
is also necessary.
