Discovering the Poles--Historic Polar Images 1845-1960
Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge

Comment Deadline: Friday, 1 September 2006

The Scott Polar Research Institute (SPRI) at the University of Cambridge
has put forward a proposal to the UK Joint Information Systems Committee
(JISC) for funding to digitise its entire archive of photographic
negatives from 1845-1960 (including daguerrotypes, lantern slides, glass
plate negatives, and more modern cellulose nitrate and acetate formats),
along with related documentary records selected for educational and
research value. The Discovering the Poles project aims to provide remote
access for all to photographic negatives and selections from related
archival collections held at SPRI, which are amongst the richest in the
world for the study of polar environments, exploration, and science.
Images from the digital negatives will be made freely available for
public use via an educational licence. JISC is now seeking feedback from
potential users.

For further details, see SPRI's outline bid at:

Over the next few weeks, you have the opportunity to comment on and vote
for this or other projects shortlisted by the JISC. A consultation form
is available online (http://survey.bris.ac.uk/jisc/digiconsultphase2)
through which you can express your opinions on the shortlisted
proposals. The final list will be decided in September.
