Akvaplan-niva, one of northern Europe's largest independent companies
providing environmental and aquaculture consultancy, is looking for a
Ph.D. candidate who will work on the biological effects of crude oil on
the polar cod (Boreogadus saida). The assignment will start in mid 2006
and last three years in collaboration with many research institutions
(Norwegian Polar Institute, University of Tromso, Norwegian Institute
for Water Research, NOAA Auke Bay, and IRIS Akvamiljo). The field work
will be carried out in Kongsfjorden and at the Arctic Marine Laboratory
in Ny-Alesund, Svalbard. Sampling will be performed with research
vessels.

The successful candidate will perform the biomarker analyses, including
P450 enzyme activity, PAH metabolite measurements in the bile, Phase II
enzymes, anti-oxidant defenses, and PCR techniques. The candidate will
also investigate the effect of oil on the antifreeze processes of the
fish. Knowledge in biochemistry and analytical skills are a plus, and a
good understanding of analytical instruments (such as plate
reader/spectrophotometer) is required. A good comprehension of marine
ecotoxicology related to the effects of PAH is also required.

The Ph.D. candidate will work within the marine environment and
petroleum research group at Akvaplan-niva in the Polar Environmental
Centre in Tromso and be part of the ARCTOS network
(http://www.nfh.uit.no/arctos/), with access to its courses and
seminars. Academically, the position will be under the Norwegian College
