The International Arctic Research Center at the University of Alaska, in
cooperation with DAMOCLES (Developing Arctic Modelling and Observing
Capabilities for Long-term Environmental Studies), the Russian
Foundation for Basic Research, the Russian Ministry of Science and
Education, and the Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics, invites the
participation of K-12 teachers on board the Icebreaker Kapitan
Dranitsyn.

This Arctic Expedition is concurrent with the fifth scientific cruise to
the Arctic Ocean of the Nansen Amundsen Basins Observation System
(NABOS) program that is funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and Japan
Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). The Arctic
Expedition will be offered as a University of Alaska course (NRM 595/E
D595) entitled "Climate Change in the Arctic Ocean" with instruction and
guidance from an international team of experienced polar researchers
specializing in disciplines such as oceanography, meteorology, biology,
chemistry, and arctic paleoclimate.

The pre-college teachers will be provided a unique opportunity to learn
about and engage in high-latitude arctic climate change research and to
gain a better understanding of how scientific research is done in
practice.

Funds are available to provide lodging and meals aboard the icebreaker,
and travel to and from Kirkenes, Norway, where the scientific cruise
begins and ends. The expedition departure will occur between 15-25
August and the scientific cruise will require 33 ship days. The exact
date of departure will be confirmed by 10 April 2006 based upon the
final schedule of the icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn.
