The Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) technique is becoming a mature numerical
technique to study physical and dynamical phenomena within the planetary
boundary layer (PBL), and several advances in atmospheric and ocean
modelling originate from LES applications. Until recently, the LES
applications have addressed idealized PBLs.

The proposed Ph.D. programme will focus on the problem of interaction
between a more realistic stratified turbulent flow within the PBL and
complex topography of the Earth's surface. The problem is important for
accurate wind mapping, weather and climate simulations, and data
assimilation. This is a critical step toward reliable and accurate
environmental modelling on local scales.

The successful candidate will assist in further development of the
Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre (NERSC:
http://www.nersc.no) large-eddy simulation code LESNIC. He/she will also
participate in evaluation of the code using remote sensing and in situ
measurements. The study will result in significant advancement in our
understanding of the turbulence-topography interactions in realistic
environments.

The candidate must have a strong background in numerical mathematics,
computational fluid dynamics or geosciences (meteorology, oceanography,
hydrology etc.) modelling. General graduates in geosciences with a
strong physical background are also encouraged to apply. Good knowledge
of FORTRAN, UNIX, and MPI are advantageous.

The Ph.D. will be granted at the University of Bergen, but the
successful candidate will work at NERSC.

Candidates from all EU member states and associated states are eligible
to apply; residents or citizens of Norway are not eligible. Women and
residents of new EU member states are encouraged to apply.

Applications must be submitted by e-mail (admin [at] nersc.no) and should
include a complete overview of education and previous practice (CV), a
letter explaining motivation and background (maximum two pages), list of
publications, copies of certificates and diplomas, as well as names and
addresses of three scientific references.
