North Cascades Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to
conserving and restoring Northwest environments through education, will
offer a one-week leadership program for teenage girls that combines
leadership, mountaineering, and science. The ten-day program will be
held 6-15 August and is open to girls 15-19 years old who have shown
keen interest in science and the outdoors. The program is free to young
women who qualify via a merit-based application process.

"Girls on Ice" will be based out of Easton Glacier on the south side of
Mount Baker in Washington and will focus on field research and
glaciology as well as team building and mountaineering skills. The
program is taught by Erin Pettit, Ph.D., a glaciologist who spends six
weeks a year studying the glaciers of Antarctica.

"Girls on Ice" was established by Pettit in 1999 and involves hiking
over mountain trails under the supervision of female glaciologists and
trail guides. Tents, cooking equipment, and other supplies will be
provided. Curriculum involves study of the glacial environment of the
North Cascades, learning how to conduct scientific experiments under
challenging conditions and navigate glacial terrain safely.

Participation is open to teenage girls regardless of their ability to
pay or buy equipment. Applications are due by 15 March and are available
at http://www.ncascades.org/programs/youth/girls_on_ice/index.html or by
calling 360-856-5700 #209. The application requires a written narrative
and two recommendations from teachers, coaches, or employers. Successful
candidates will be notified by 15 April.

Established in 1986, North Cascades Institute offers a wide range of
environmental education programs for people of all ages including
natural history seminars, the award-winning Mountain School, and a
number of volunteer stewardship programs. In July, it opened North
Cascades Environmental Learning Center on the shores of Diablo Lake
surrounded by the pristine wilderness of North Cascades National Park.
