The last few years have seen a surge of interest in use of the isotopic
and trace element composition of biominerals to reconstruct the
paleoenvironmental conditions of marine and freshwater systems. Recent
advances range from the increasing use of Mg/Ca in foraminifera as a
paleotemperature indicator, and the improvement of the B isotope proxy
of paleo-seawater pH, to the application of oxygen isotopes of diatoms
from lake sediments to paleoclimatic studies and the recognition that
compound-specific work may yield better records of C and N isotopes from
bulk or opal-occluded organic matter.

This session aims to bring together biologists and geochemists working
on both the improvement and application of these and similar
paleoenvironmental proxies. Submission of abstracts covering any of the
following topics are encouraged:
- experimental or theoretical work on the incorporation of trace
elements or isotopes into Ca- or Si-biominerals;
- field-based groundtruthing of isotopic or trace element proxies;
- novel paleoenvironmental reconstructions based on trace elements or
isotopes; and
- improvement of analytical techniques for sample preparation and
analysis.
