The Institute of Low Temperature Science (ILTS) at Hokkaido University
(HU) invites applications for a postdoctoral position working on an
international education program in the field of cryospheric science. The
initial appointment is until March 2006, with a possibility of annual
renewal until March 2009. The annual salary is approximately 4,000,000
to 5,000,000 Yen (36,000 to 45,000 USD) depending on experience. The
position is available from 1 October 2005.

The successful candidate is responsible for supporting an international
education program jointly organized by HU and the Swiss Federal
Institute of Technology (ETH) starting from 2007. The program aims to
provide graduate level students in the field of cryospheric science with
the opportunity to take courses offered by HU and ETH in Japan and
Switzerland. The courses include class lectures, field courses, and
laboratory experiments which relate to glaciology, climatology,
atmospheric science, and oceanography in the cryospheric environment.
The candidate is expected to design the program with consideration of
novel education methods such as an e-learning system. When the program
commences, the candidate will support the lectures and courses, and also
organize domestic and international trips for students. In addition to
the main task above, the candidate will be involved in the research
projects of ILTS and graduate level education.

Knowledge and research experience related to cryospheric science at the
Ph.D. level is required. Proficiency in English (and German) is
essential to communicate with Swiss counterparts, and also necessary are
communication skills working with Japanese staff who are not always
