Dear Colleague,

We would like to draw your attention to the following special session at
the 2006 Ocean Sciences Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii and request that you
consider submitting an abstract for the session:

OS112: Pan-Arctic Margin Dynamics - Physical Forcing, Biogeochemical
Cycling, and Ecosystem Response.

Description:
Rapid observed changes in the Arctic indicate that the polar
biogeochemical and physical system may be a bell-weather of global
climatic change. The arctic shelf and slope regions are key sites for
mixing, transport, carbon production, and transformation processes
directly impacting oceanographic structure and ecosystem processes.
These effects also extend to the deep ocean ridges. Boundary currents
along slopes and ridges transport heat, salt, fresh water,
biogeochemical properties and sediments around the Arctic Ocean. Margins
are the dynamic boundary for cross-slope shelf-basin interactions,
playing a major role in the ventilation of the deep basins by
transporting dense, brine-enriched shelf waters and associated organic
and inorganic carbon to the abyssal region. Understanding the key
processes regulating interactions across and along arctic margins are
vital for modeling the past, present, and future of the arctic
biogeochemical and physical system. This session will provide a forum to
discuss ongoing observational, modeling, and theoretical studies of the
physical, chemical, biological, and geological aspects of shelf-basin
exchange, boundary current dynamics, and gateway exchanges. Discussion
of internationally coordinated pan-arctic studies during the
International Polar Year (IPY) in 2007-2009 is also encouraged.
