The Dry Valleys in southern Victoria Land, Antarctica, exhibit one of
the most extreme environments on Earth. Their modern settings were
extensively investigated during the past decades within the scope of the
Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Program, funded by the U.S.
National Science Foundation (NSF). Reconstruction of the geological
history of the Dry Valleys, in contrast, was hampered by the length and
discontinuity of the sedimentary records as yet investigated. In order
to recover continuous sediment sequences that penetrate for the first
time the entire Holocene and deep into the last glacial, three lakes in
Taylor Valley were cored during a joint American-German expedition in
austral summer 2002/03.

The contribution of the University Leipzig to the international
collaboration focuses on selected chronological, sedimentological,
mineralogical, and biogeochemical studies of the sediment sequences
recovered. For this purpose the university is seeking potentially
interested candidates for a position, which shall start on 1 October
2005. It is funded for one year by the German Research Foundation (DFG),
with an opportunity for two additional years. Employment conditions and
salary are in accordance with the university regulations for academic
personnel.

Candidates should have a Diploma or M.Sc. in geosciences or related
disciplines and should be able to efficiently work in a small
interdisciplinary team. Paleolimnological experience, knowledge of
appropriate analytical techniques, and good English language proficiency
will be an advantage.

The University Leipzig is an equal opportunity/affirmative action
employer and encourages applications from qualified women and
individuals from underrepresented groups. Female candidates and disabled
candidates who are equally qualified will receive preference.

The deadline for applications, including a detailed CV, is Sunday, 21
August 2005.
