Workshop Announcement
Antarctic Regional Ecological Observatory (AREO)
13-14 September 2005
Byrd Polar Center, The Ohio State University
Columbus, Ohio

A workshop will be held on 13-14 September 2005 to bring together
scientists from universities, federal agencies, and non-governmental
agencies to organize the Antarctic Regional Ecological Observatory
(AREO). AREO will monitor ecological processes on the continent of
Antarctica and adjacent near-shore marine environments. This workshop is
in response to the development of the National Ecological Observation
Network (NEON; http://www.neoninc.org/) vis a vis the Consortium of
Regional Ecological Observatories (http://www.neoncoreo.org/).

The AREO will be organized to answer regional- to continental-scale
scientific questions posed by NEON. AREO will have the interdisciplinary
participation necessary to achieve credible ecological forecasting and
prediction. As such, AREO can transform the way science is conducted in
Antarctica by enabling the integration of research and education from
natural ecological to social and economic systems, and from genomes to
the biosphere. For Antarctica, a continent without national boundaries,
the participation of international scientists and educators also will be
important.

The workshop will be held at the Byrd Polar Center, The Ohio State
University, Columbus, Ohio. Organizers are making every effort to
recruit a broad and diverse group. The goals of the workshop will be to:
- define scientific questions for AREO;
- identify resources that will contribute to AREO and NEON;
- identify international NGOs and GOs for collaborative efforts; and
- form an executive committee to develop a governance structure and
identify host institutions and a list of members.

If you would like to attend the workshop, please contact anyone on the
ad hoc committee below and they will include you in future announcements.
