The Department of Arctic Technology at the University Centre in Svalbard
(UNIS), invites applications for a Ph.D position in Arctic Technology.
The department wants to strengthen ongoing research activities within
ice mechanics and forces on coastal and offshore structures.

Ice represents a major challenge to marine structures, yet, the
estimation of forces on structures is not well defined. The shortcomings
of present models are basically due to lack of full-scale measurements
and lack of precise characterization of the ice. Applications are
welcome that focus on measurements and simulations of thermo-mechanical
properties of first-year sea ice related to estimation of ice forces on
structures.

The employment contract is for three years and the successful applicant
will be based at UNIS in Longyearbyen. He/she is expected to contribute
actively in ongoing scientific activities at the department and to the
development of UNIS in a more general sense.

An expert committee appointed by the director of UNIS will evaluate the
qualifications of the applicants. The committee will review the
applications in detail. The appointment will be made by the Board of
Directors based on the recommendation from the director of UNIS.

Application Deadline: Wednesday, 1 June 2005

To apply for this position, applicants must submit three copies of:
- Curriculum vitae (including a full list of publications & previously
held grants)
- project description for the suggested Ph.D. research project, including
a tentative time schedule

Send applications to:
