The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh is offering a field school at Swan
Point, the oldest archaeological site in interior Alaska, from 20 June
to 29 July 2005.

For the last 14,000 years, people have been periodically living at this
overlook site. The field school will provide students with experience
excavating historic, protohistoric, archaic, and paleoindian materials.
An emphasis will be placed on active learning by doing and lecture style
instruction will be minimal.

The site is not accessible by road and the nearest town is Delta
Junction. Participants must be able to hike three miles with packs.
Conditions are primitive and water is brought in. Students must supply
their own tents. Food is provided, but due to remoteness special diets
cannot be accommodated. All basic camp chores are shared. Participants
will be expected to work daily while at the site and will leave twice
for breaks in Fairbanks.

The cost is $2800 USD for undergraduates and $3500 USD for graduate
students, including six credits through UW-Oshkosh. All non-Wisconsin
residents will have an additional administrative fee of $300 USD
(undergrad) or $600 USD (graduate).

No prior field experience is required, however, a class in introductory
archaeology is useful.
