Climate Change and Benthic Marine Communities

Funding is available for an M.Sc. student to study impacts of climate
change on benthic marine habitats and communities in the western Arctic.
The project will involve two summers of field research on Banks Island,
NWT, examining benthic substrates, flora, and fauna in areas affected by
reduced sea ice cover, thermokarst, coastal erosion, and increased wave
exposure.

Desired skills include familiarity with marine flora and fauna
identification, knowledge of arctic and/or boreal benthic marine habitat
and environmental factors affecting them, familiarity or experience with
geographic information systems, understanding of side-scan sonar and
related geophysical methods of habitat description. Student should be
adaptable and willing to work under isolated and possibly harsh field
conditions in the Canadian Arctic.
