The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment
Research Council (NERC), delivers a worldclass programme of scientific
research while sustaining an active, leading role in Antarctic affairs
for the UK. Ice cores provide a key source of data for this research.
However, transfer functions between the data they contain and climate
variables are often speculative, which is why we are embarking on a new
project to improve ice-core interpretation, and seek the assistance of
an experienced paleoglaciologist or atmospheric scientist.

This 2-year, fixed-term appointment will commence in January. While the
role is based at Cambridge, you will spend a month in Antarctica, and be
involved in the acquisition of ice cores from the Antarctic Peninsula,
the subsequent analysis of chemical species within these cores at very
high resolution, as well as the development of robust transfer functions
between ice-core chemistry variability and the principal modes of the
regional atmospheric circulation. Last, but by no means least, you will
also be involved in the publication of research in peer-reviewed
journals and presentations at conferences.

A Ph.D. in paleoglaciology or atmospheric science would be ideal, but
not essential, provided you have a good first degree in physics,
mathematics or an environmental science, together with 2 years' relevant
research experience. A track record of publications in scientific
journals would also be an advantage, and you must be physically capable
and medically fit to work in Antarctic conditions.

In addition to the obvious personal rewards, we also offer a generous
benefits package including a pension scheme, flexible working hours and
25 days' annual leave.
