Arctic Field Site Electrical Engineer

Salary Range: $50,000 - $64,000 (plus field-site salary compensation)

Job Placement in Winter/Spring 2002

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual interested in working with a
small group of people at an arctic National Science Foundation research
facility near Kangerlussuaq, Greenland. The essential functions of the
qualified person are to coordinate the activities and operations of a
high-power, L-band radar system, enhance, maintain, and troubleshoot the
radar system's components, including RF transmitter, RF antenna and
receiver, and data acquisition hardware and software. The individual will
work closely with other site crew to assist and interact with visitors,
the local community, airport personnel, and scientists/engineers with
ongoing experiments at the site and in the local area. The individual will
participate in the operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of
other sensitive scientific instruments as well as maintenance of the on-site
infrastructure. Good physical health is required to lift moderate weights.
The individual will work with other site staff in routine maintenance of
the facility and must be flexible in working hours. Opportunities exist for
electronic system design and software/hardware development.

The qualified individual should hold a BS in electrical engineering or
equivalent work experience of at least five years. Good troubleshooting
skills and common sense are essential. The successful applicant will
have demonstrated experience working closely with a small group. Good
people-skills are important. Knowledge of computers and programming,
especially PCs running Windows 98 and NT, would also be an important
attribute. Electrical engineering with RF engineering skills is desirable.

The position is for the duration of at least one year. The individual
will be provided comfortable private housing stocked with major
appliances and sundry living items, basic food items, internet
connection, some winter gear, and other essentials. Opportunities abound
