  1. Marie Tharp Fellowship 2012-2013
Earth Institute and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory
    Columbia University

The Earth Institute (EI) and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO) at
Columbia University invite applications for the Marie Tharp Fellowship
2012-2013. This fellowship is part of a greater EI/LDEO effort at
promoting the advancement of women in science.

The purpose of the award is to provide an opportunity for earth
scientists to conduct research at Columbia University for a period of
2-3 months. Fellows will have an opportunity to work with faculty,
research staff, postdocs, and graduate students during their fellowship.
Each fellow is expected to participate in EI/LDEO activities and make a
scientific presentation during their residence.

The competition is open to junior and mid-career scientists in the earth
sciences. Applicants must hold a PhD at the time of application. The
goal of this award is to promote women in science. Postdoctoral scholars
are not eligible to apply. The duration of the Marie Tharp Fellowship is
between 2-3 months over the period July 2012 through June 2013. The
fellowship must be taken in residence at one of the earth science units
of the Earth Institute and will provide up to $25,000 for support of the
fellow during the fellowship period. The duration of the fellowship
period must be agreed upon by both the fellow and the proposed
collaborator.

Applicants must submit a proposal (maximum three pages) describing the
proposed project and with whom at Columbia they plan to work.
Applications must be endorsed by the proposed Columbia collaborators
prior to submission. The proposal must be accompanied by a curriculum
vitae, two letters of reference, a proposed budget, and the budget form
(available at: http://tinyurl.com/MarieTharpFellowship-2012-2013).
Application materials must be submitted via email to Kuheli Dutt
(Kuheli.Dutt [at] columbia.edu).

Application deadline: Saturday, 31 March 2012.

  1. SCAR Antarctic Science Fellowships 2012-2013
    COMNAP Antarctic Research Fellowship 2012-13

Two leading Antarctic organizations announce opportunities for early
career researchers. The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research
(SCAR) and the Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programmes
(COMNAP) are working together to attract talented researchers,
scientists, engineers and other professionals to strengthen
international capacity and cooperation in fields such as climate,
biodiversity, and astrophysics research. The Fellowships are worth up to
15,000 USD each and up to five (4 SCAR and 1 COMNAP Fellowships) are on
offer for 2012.

SCAR has been offering scientific fellowships to early career scientists
since 2005. Such fellowships have enabled Antarctic and Southern Ocean
scientists to participate in a range of significant research including
using ice cores to determine proxies for the Southern Annular Mode, a
molecular study of Antarctic ostracods, and investigating particulate
carbon and biogenic silica in sea ice in both the arctic and Antarctic
regions.

In 2011, COMNAP launched its own Antarctic Research Fellowship Scheme,
offering one fellowship for an early career person in order to carry out
research within a COMNAP program.

Application deadline: 13 June 2012.

SCAR website at:
