  1. Registration Available
Arctic in Rapid Transition Science Workshop
    23-26 October 2012
    Sopot, Poland

Organizers announce that registration is now open for the Arctic in
Rapid Transition (ART) Science Workshop. The workshop will be held at
the Institute of Oceanology in Sopot, Poland, from 23-26 October 2012.

The ART workshop will address the challenge of integrating modeling and
observations in order to identify linkages and feedbacks between
atmosphere-ice-ocean forcings and biological-geochemical processes that
are key to ecosystem function, land-ocean interactions and to the
productive capacity of the past, present and future Arctic Ocean.

The workshop is jointly organized with the Association of Polar Early
Career Scientists (APECS) and will propose training sessions on
theoretical and practical aspects of marine sciences, as well as plenary
talks and breakout sessions to discuss and initiate the writing of
collaborative papers lead by both early career and senior scientists.
The ART-APECS Workshop is open to scientists who share a common interest
in improving our current understanding and projective capacity of the
causes and implications of changing physical conditions on arctic marine
ecosystems on multiple time-scales. Limited funding is available for
participants that will express interest in contributing to the ART
scientific framework through the registration form.

Registration deadline: 20 July 2012.

More information on the preliminary agenda, venue, list of mentors, and
invited speakers, as well as the registration form, can be found on the
ART-APECS Workshop webpage:

  1. Call for Abstracts
    Earth Observation and Cryosphere Science
    13-16 November 2012
    Frascati, Italy

Organizers of the "Earth Observation and Cryosphere Science" symposium
announce a call for abstracts. The meeting will be hosted 13-16 November
2012 in, Frascati, Italy, from 13 to 16 November 2012.

The abstract submission deadline of 15th June 2012 is fast approaching
and we would like to invite you to submit an abstract this month if you
have not already done so.

The main objectives of the symposium are to:

- Assess recent progress in the full range of cryosphere relevant
EO-based observations and techniques.
- Review the major scientific advances in cryosphere science with
special attention on understanding cryosphere-atmosphere-ocean
interactions and climate change impacts.
- Discuss the challenges and opportunities in cryosphere science
offered by the new generation of EO satellites as well as the major
observational gaps for the coming decades.
- Consolidate a scientific roadmap outlining the main priorities and
challenges for the cryosphere community in terms of novel
observations, enhanced EO-based products and techniques and
innovative scientific results.

The meeting is organized by the European Space Agency (ESA), the
European Geophysical Union (EGU), and the Climate and Cryosphere (CliC)
Project. Registration and abstract submission are currently open.

Abstract submission deadline: Friday, 15 June 2012.

  1. Workshop Available
    Texture Topic in Tromso
    15-19 October 2012
    Tromso, Norway

Organizers announce the availability of a workshop on texture analysis,
entitled "Texture Topic in Tromso." It will be held 15-19 October 2012
at the University of Tromso, Norway.

The workshop is intended to familiarize participants with a method of
texture analysis and orientation imaging (the CIP method) and to discuss
texture interpretation with a special emphasis on ice. The workshop is
open to all PhD level and postgraduate students and researchers. There
is the possibility of college credit for anyone interested.

Application deadline: 12 October 2012
Any PhD student wishing to receive college credit, and enrolled in a
university aside from the University of Tromso, must apply no later than
24 August 2012.

  1. Save the Date
Third International Symposium on Arctic Research
    15-17 January 2013
    Tokyo, Japan

Organizers announce that the Third International Symposium on Arctic
Research (ISAR-3) will be held in Tokyo, Japan on 15-17 January 2013.

ISAR-3 will be directed to detect and clarify the recent changes and
understand the substantial processes in the region, and to search the
global influence. It will also be directed to envision the future
through further scientific discussions and to enhance more national and
international cooperation/collaboration, including the ones between
arctic and non-arctic countries.

Updated details, including information on abstracts, registration, and
travel support will be posted as available, at:
http://www.jcar.org/isar-3/.
