UiT The Arctic University of Norway is seeking three PhD students in
biology and technology. The available positions are in three areas:
Arctic oceanography/ocean observatory technology, remote sensing, and
Arctic marine biology/technology. These are full PhD positions with a
fixed-term of four years based in Tromso, Norway.

Arctic oceanography/ocean observatory technology:
This position interconnects the seafloor, ocean and atmosphere regarding
two important questions: How large is the flux of methane from the
seafloor to the atmosphere? What are the magnitudes and rates of changes
occurring in the Arctic under increasing ocean temperature scenarios?
The successful candidate should hold a M.Sc. degree (or similar) in
oceanography, ocean modelling and/or marine technology, with good
cooperative skills and a desire to work in a cross-disciplinary team.

Remote sensing:
The successful candidate will do research in the field of remote
sensing, with emphasis on characterizing and monitoring sea ice
conditions in the marginal ice zone. The work will involve analysis of
multi-modal sensor data, which may include multi-spectral and/or hyper
spectral optical data, new synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging
products like quad polarization images and/or interferometric image
pairs, and development of methodologies for fusing SAR and optical data
sets. Candidates should have strong analytical skills, experience with
data analysis and remote sensing, and good background in physics,
mathematics, statistics, and signal processing.

Arctic marine biology/technology:
The successful candidate will work with autonomous underwater vehicles
to characterize sea-ice fauna and algal communities, and with remote
sensing to characterize different ice types. The candidate must
have experience from data treatment and/or control engineering, and
ability to coordinate large and different data sets. The successful
candidate should hold a M.Sc. degree (or similar) in marine biology or
technology, marine cybernetics or underwater technology, with good
cooperative skills and a desire to work in a cross-disciplinary team.

The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is seeking candidates for a Summer
2016 Graduate Student Internship for the NASA Arctic-Boreal
Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE). This is fixed-term internship from
June-August 2016 based in Greenbelt, Maryland.

The successful candidate will be responsible for creating and validating
baseline Arctic datasets. The highest priority project will be to create
Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) of the NASA ABoVE (Arctic-Boreal
Vulnerability Experiment) study domain using commercial high resolution
imagery in a high performance computing environment. Then, these DEMs
could be validated and used for additional analyses of other baseline
datasets currently being used by the NASA ABoVE campaign. A proficiency
with scripting and coding is desired, such as familiarity with Linux,
python programming, and perl. Familiarity with Ames Stereo Pipeline (or
another DEM creation software) and experience with/understanding of high
performance computing systems are also advantageous.

  1. Summer Field Assistant

The University of Michigan is seeking applicants to fill summer field
assistant positions. These are seasonal positions operating in areas
around Toolik Field Station, Alaska.

Successful candidates will conduct research to understand ecosystem
functions in soils, streams, and lakes, and how Arctic tundra will
respond to climate change.

Responsibilities include sample collection, field measurements, and lab
analyses. Fieldwork involves hiking in remote areas while carrying
heavy packs of field equipment. Additional responsibilities may include
data processing and running experiments at the Toolik Lake Field
station.

This position is associated with the National Science Foundation Arctic
Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) program.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) is seeking applicants to fill
the position of Environmental Protection Specialist for the Alaska Outer
Continental Shelf Region (AKOCSR). This is a full time permanent position
based in Anchorage, Alaska.

AKOCSR has the responsibility for operations, at the field level, of the
minerals leasing program, conducting lease sales, and the gathering and
assessing of basic data concerning the environmental effects resulting
from mineral exploration, production, and transportation on the OCS.
This position serves as Chief of the Environmental Analysis Section I in
the Alaska Outer Continental Shelf Region.

The successful candidate will be responsible for duties including:

-Supervising the Environmental Analysis Section and managing the
coordination of staff activities such as conducting environmental
assessments and study evaluations relating to the OCS;
-Establishing priorities, plans, and budgets for National Environmental
Policy Act review and environmental consultations;
-Ensuring coordination of State and other Federal
agencies in environmental reviews; and
-Developing systems, policies, and procedures for OCS-wide environmental
analyses.
