The Glacier and Ice Sheet Research Group at the Institute of Low Temperature Science at Hokkaido University invite applications for the position of postdoctoral researcher on a project entitled, "Projecting discharge from the Greenland ice sheet using climatic forcings derived from atmosphere-ocean models." This position is located at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan.

This full-time position will focus on carrying out numerical simulations of the ice dynamics and mass balance of the Greenland ice sheet with the ice sheet model SImulation COde for POLythermal Ice Sheets (SICOPOLIS) http://www.sicopolis.net/, forced by climate scenarios for the recent past and the future. Spin-ups in order to provide suitable initial conditions for these simulations must also be conducted. Desirable model improvements include schemes for basal hydrology, ice stream dynamics, implementation of new digital elevation models (DEMs) for the ice surface and bed, and program optimization (numerical techniques and computing speed). Emphasis can be placed depending on individual interest. Cooperation with the domestic and international project partners is required, and dissemination of results in the form of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific conferences is expected.

The successful candidate will have a PhD/doctoral degree in environmental/atmospheric/cryospheric sciences, oceanography, physics, geophysics, or a related natural sciences field; experience in numerical modeling with finite differences; good computer programming skills (preferably in Fortran); and a reasonable command of oral and written English are a prerequisite.

The Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research at the Alfred Wegener Institute announce a call for applications for a PhD researcher on electromagnetic (EM) ice thickness measurements. This full-time will be located in Bremerhaven, Germany.

Application deadline: 28 July 2017.

The position will encompass data analysis, development, and improvement of multi-channel inversion algorithms for advanced sea ice parameter retrievals (e.g. platelet ice, slush, pressure ridge porosity), and conducting field campaigns to acquire new data by taking advantage of the available suite of airborne (helicopter and fixed-wing) and ground-based multi-frequency instrumentation.

The successful candidate will have strong analytical and programming skills and hold a Master's degree, or equivalent degree, in geophysics, physics, mathematics, or a related field. Applicants should be enthusiastic about electromagnetic induction data analysis and field work. Proficiency in a programming language and good English language skills are a must.

Previous experience with frequency- or time-domain (EM) induction sounding, and/or geophysical inversion algorithms will be an asset. Applicants should have good teamwork skills and the willingness to actively cooperate with colleagues from a diverse international research community. Preparedness to participate in extensive sea-going or airborne field campaigns in polar regions is expected.

The position is limited to three years, with the earliest starting date of 1 September 2017.

The Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research at the Alfred Wegener Institute announce a call for applications for a PhD researcher on radar snow observations on sea ice. This full-time will be located in Bremerhaven, Germany.

This position will include the experimental development of novel on-ice and airborne radar snow thickness retrieval methods, improvement of data processing algorithms, and conducting field campaigns to test methods and acquire new data.

The successful candidate will hold a Master's or equivalent in geophysics, physics, electrical engineering, or a related field; have a strong background in radar and digital signal processing (DSP) methods; and/or experience with the development of high frequency (HF) radar instruments. Applicants should be enthusiastic about snow and working in cold climate conditions. Proficiency in a programming language and good English language skills are a must.

Previous experience with radar data processing, snow microwave remote sensing, or HF electronics will be an asset. Applicants should have good teamwork skills and the willingness to actively cooperate with colleagues from a diverse international research community. Preparedness to participate in extensive sea-going or airborne winter field campaigns in polar regions is expected.
