Organizers are currently accepting abstract submissions for the Arctic Change 2017 conference. The meeting will be held 11-15 February 2018 in Quebec City, Canada.

Conveners of the following session invite abstract submissions:

SESSION CBIK03: Arctic Change as Seen Through the Eyes of Indigenous Guardians
Session Chairs: Trevor Bell and Michelle Slaney.

This session is intended to explore not only the changes witnessed by Indigenous Guardians (land observers), but how these observations are assembled, recorded, and used in local decision-making. Within Canada, there is a growing number of community-to-regional scale observations or "watchmen" programs, whereby Indigenous peoples monitor and document change in order to better manage and protect their waters, lands, and territories. Different regions/communities have adopted different decision-making processes and practices, some of which emphasize Indigenous Knowledge (IK), some combine both IK and scientific data, while others adopt multiple ways of knowing within a geospatial framework. Bringing together Indigenous Guardians and stewards with different perspectives on Arctic change and approaches to observing and documenting such changes will provide an opportunity to share practices and provide valuable insights on decision-making frameworks that incorporate multiple ways of knowing.
