The Institute of Arctic Biology (IAB) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) invites applications for the position of Master's (M.S.) graduate student in shrub feedbacks to carbon and nitrogen cycling along a boreal-arctic transect in northern Alaska. This position will be located in Fairbanks, Alaska, with fieldwork distributed between Fairbanks and areas north of the Toolik Field Station, Alaska.

The graduate student will focus on the effects of the growth and ecophysiology of Siberian alder on biogeochemical cycling across topo-edaphic sequences along a latitudinal transect from the boreal forest to arctic tundra. The student will be expected to develop their own research questions within the overall framework of the project and will have the opportunity to interact with Principal Investigators and other graduate students working on project.

Due to the distributed nature of the research sites, the graduate student will be conducting research and camping in very rugged and remote terrain.

This graduate position will be supported through a combination of research assistantships and teaching assistantships. Fieldwork is expected to begin in the summer of 2018, with coursework starting in the fall of 2018.

For acceptance into the Biology and Wildlife Graduate Program, applicants must have an appropriate academic background, evidence of ability to complete a graduate degree, a faculty member who has agreed to accept the applicant as their student, and a funding source identified for the applicant and their research.

Applicants must also apply for graduate study to the Department of Biology and Wildlife at UAF.

Application deadline: 15 January 2018
