Two Arctic workshops will convene during the 2017 International Arctic Change Conference
to be held 11-15 December 2017 in Québec, Canada. These workshops will be at the Québec City Convention Centre in Québec, Canada.

Organizers invite participation in the following two workshops:

Workshop title: Mine the Data: A roadmap towards stakeholder-oriented biodiversity warehousing
Workshop date/time: Wednesday, 13 December 2017, 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time
Workshop location: Room 204B, Québec City Convention Centre

Workshop Overview:

Data on Arctic biodiversity are entering the public domain at increasing pace, yet they are at risk of being lost due to poor documentation and communication, and/or inconsistent quality. It is time to develop integrated solutions that facilitate open access, sharing, as well as flexible yet reliable exploration of these irreplaceable sources of information. Biodiversity warehousing solutions should be stakeholder-oriented, and their development based on user/stakeholder feedback.

The goal of this workshop is to discuss how biodiversity data management should integrate with research and storytelling. Organizers will provide a hands-on experience of the benthos data warehouse CRITTER, a prototypical example of an integrated data-exploration system currently under development at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven, Germany.

Organizers plan to discuss with participants how modern tools are capable of learning and integrating user preferences, and how data that were formerly stored in excel sheets can be brought to life via better management and visualization options. The main objective of this workshop is to compile, share, and discuss your expertise, expectations and experiences in relation to the CRITTER-test run and other data-management and data-exploration approaches and tools. Particular focus will be on the general usability of various approaches, but also specific themes, including formats, types of information, and visualization tools This perspective is critical to maximize the use of data warehousing systems, and offer services that support analysis, synthesis, modelling, as well as inspiration for future research, such as self-discoverable datasets on biodiversity changes and story-telling. The data should not be lost after initial use but should enter well-instructed, sustainable and longer data-life cycles. The workshop will finish with a summary and feedback session identifying "most-wanted" data exploration tools and functionalities. From this, a position paper about biodiversity data warehousing systems is planned as final output of this workshop, with contributions from participants as co-authors on issues such as: Major gaps in the current data management/exploration approaches used in institutes (and/or in CRITTER developed at AWI), additional features users wish to be implemented in stakeholder-oriented systems, and which formats are expected next/in the near future.

Workshop title: Arctic Risk Management Network (ARMNet) Arctic Change Side Workshop
Workshop date/time: Wednesday, 13 December 2017, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time
Workshop location: Room 204B, Québec City Convention Centre

Workshop Overview:

Research regarding historical, social, and/or ecological hazards from environmental changes is relevant to Arctic Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) among local and regional communities to assist Emergency Management.

Workshop topics will include:

  • History, goals, and coordination with Applied Research in Environmental Sciences Nonprofit, Inc. (ARIES), Canadian Risks and Hazards Network (CRHNET), and Arctic Disaster Early Career Association (ADECA) and others;
  • DRR Ecosystem Mapping (https://arcticdc.org/); and
  • Facilitation teams with transdisciplinary approaches for local and regional applications.

Participants must be registered for the Arctic Change Conference to attend. The workshop is free, but space is limited. There will be door-prizes given to five workshop participants.
