The Sitka Sound Science Center invites applications for two to three research fellowship in polar and sub-Arctic research. This fixed-term, one-month positions will be located in Sitka, Alaska.

The Polar Scientist in Residency Fellowship (PSIRF) brings scientists annually to Sitka for one-month sabbaticals and offers several one-month fellowships for polar and subarctic scientists each year. The Fellowship is limited to U.S. citizens and is intended for mid-career scientists, not including graduate students.

The short sabbatical will allow scientists time that can be used in a variety of ways including: data analysis, manuscript preparation, experimentation, collaboration, or thought processing.

The PSIRF Fellows will spend a week of the residency in outreach and education activities to share their work in the schools and at other forums like public library programs, lunch meetings with students, and science cafes. The Fellows will give a lecture to the general community through the Natural History Seminar series put on by the Science Center and supported by the Sitka Charitable Trust and the University of Alaska Southeast. Fellows will also be provided guidance on best practices for communicating science to a public audience in rural Alaska. The purpose of these outreach activities is to help improve science literacy, provide opportunities for scientists to explain their research to the public, and to give students insight into the many career paths available in science

The scientists will be given lab and office space and provided with administrative support. Expenses for travel, lodging, per diem, and a small honorarium will be provided to each Fellow.
