The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) invites applications for a PhD position in data assimilation of sea ice. This fixed-term, three-year position will be located in Bergen, Norway.

NERSC is an independent non-profit research foundation in Norway affiliated with the University of Bergen. The Center conducts multidisciplinary marine, cryosphere, and atmospheric research with integration of modeling, data assimilation, and service development.

This PhD position will study novel data assimilation methods for numerical models using a time-varying mesh, possibly Lagrangian and non-conservative. In particular, the main task will be the development of an ensemble-based data assimilation system for the state-of-the-art sea ice model, neXtSIM, developed in-house at NERSC. The successful candidate will work on an interdisciplinary problem at the crossroad of numerical modeling, data assimilation, and sea-ice physics, and will work with a postdoctoral scientist employed in a companion project.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in applied mathematics, physics, or environmental science. Candidates with a background in data assimilation and/or in sea-ice modeling will be given priority. Programming skills in Python, Matlab, and C++ are desirable, as well as writing and oral fluency in English.

Applications should include a curriculum vitae, contact information for at least two references, and a motivation letter describing the applicant’s area of study and/or research activity to date, and interest in the position.

Applications should be sent via email to admin [at] nersc.no, copied to alberto.carrassi [at] nersc.no and pierre.rampal [at] nersc.no, with a subject line “Application for DASIMII PhD position.”
