I spend most of my research effort mentoring undergraduate students as they conceive of, and then build microcontroller-based sensors for the arctic and other environments. Every other year I teach a special year-long Arctic Geophysics Research Experience in which students propose their projects, design sensors that let them collect data addressing their question, and then travel to Utqiagvik, AK, in late Feb/early March to deploy their sensors on or near the sea ice.

Interests

Sea Ice, Science Education, Citizen Science

Science Specialties

creating microclimate sensors from Arduino microcontrollers; semiclassical gravity

Current Research

sea ice; near-surface arctic environment; ground-penetrating radar studies in temperate climates
